Why We Tithe?
We tithe because Abraham modeled it and God endorsed it to advance His Kingdom, and position my family for blessings. Let me explain.
Before the Law was given, Abraham gave a tenth:
“And he gave him a tenth of all.” — Genesis 14:20
Abraham’s example matters to me because the New Testament identifies him as a father of faith to those who walk in the same kind of faith: “The father of all those who believe…” — Romans 4:11
Later, God established tithing among His people and connected it with supporting His house and trusting His provision: “Bring all the tithes into the storehouse… and try Me now in this… if I will not open for you the windows of heaven.” — Malachi 3:10
And in the New Testament, giving is presented as willing generosity: “So let each one give as he purposes in his heart, not grudgingly or of necessity; for God loves a cheerful giver.” — 2 Corinthians 9:7
So, why do I use 10% as my base?
Because if it was a meaningful pattern for Abraham, it is a meaningful pattern for us.
And because generosity without a measurable standard can easily become whatever is comfortable or convenient.
We believe 10% gives me a clear biblical benchmark.
Ten percent gives my generosity somewhere to begin.
It’s the starting point.
And for us, this isn’t merely theology. I’ve lived it. I started tithing while I was in prison.
I didn’t have much. One of my first tithes was a small bottle of toothpaste that I faithfully brought to the house of the Lord.
Over the years, as I continued practicing tithing, I watched God increase my capacity to give. Today, by His grace, I am able to support multiple ministries beyond our own church.
Our church has adopted this same rhythm.
Following Abraham’s example.
Honoring what God endorsed.
Advancing the work of God’s Kingdom.
We are in good company.
Paul celebrated churches that financially partnered with the work of the gospel:
“No church shared with me concerning giving and receiving but you only.” — Philippians 4:15
And he followed that by declaring:
“And my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus.” — Philippians 4:19
May we be faithful in bringing our tithes to the House of the Lord.
May the Lord bless all that you do.
